Iheanacho In Line for Senior City Debut after Sinking Man Utd U-21

Kelechi Iheanacho scored twice as hosts Manchester City’s development squad saw off neighbours Manchester United 3-1 in an U-21 Manchester Derby on Saturday.

Visiting United’s U-21 champions had a chance of ending their season with a win at the Academy stadium after Ashley Fletcher’s goal right before the break, but Iheanacho second-half brace; complimented by left-back Angelino’s effort sealed victory for the coach Patrick Vieira’s side.

Iheanacho is well in contention for his senior Man City debut in Sunday’s Premier League season finale against Southampton, having caught the eyes of manager Manuel Pellegrini with some impressive performances in recent months.

The Nigerian scored in the reverse fixture of the FA Youth Cup final before scoring the match-winner as City defeated FC Porto to win the Premier League International Cup.

There are yet strong indications that the 19-year-old will not be loaned out next season as City bid to reclaim the Premier League title; however, Iheanacho could heap much more emphasis on his claim to a first team shirt when he represents the Flying Eagles at the World Youth Championship beginning in one week’s time.
The striker will fly straight to New Zealand via Singapore next week to join up with the rest of the coach Manu Garba-tutored lads, who are aiming to win the Fifa U-20 World Cup for a first time.

Fletcher’s strike gave United a 1-0 lead into the interval on Saturday, but Iheanacho restored parity in the 55th minute, turning his man in before sinking the ball inside the bottom corner of the net.

Spanish defender Angelino pulled the hosts ahead six minutes after the hour mark, when his deflected shot found the back of the net from a set piece.

Iheanacho rounded off another fine performance for the development squad ten minutes from time, curling the ball into the corner of goal.
