Former Chelsea defender David Luiz has revealed he is a virgin and plans to abstain from sex until he marries his girlfriend Sara Madeira.
The 28-year-old made the announcement alongside a photograph he posted on Instagram showing himself being bapitised in his teammate Maxwell's swimming pool.
Now plying his trade for Paris St Germain in France, the Brazilian international has been dating Portuguese student Sara Madeira for several years after he met her during his stint with Benfica. The two have rarely been pictured in public together, although they were spotted court side at a 2011
basketball game in London not long after he transferred to Chelsea.
In the post, alongside his declaration that he has 'chosen to wait', Luiz cited a verse from Corinthians: 'Therefore if anyone is in Christ, he is a new creation. The old things have passed away. Behold, all things have become new.'
He then added: 'How wonderful to live with you Lord, thank you for loving me so much and [taking] care of me! My life is yours, and I am your servant! What're [sic] always in the center of all my decisions. I love my God! Amen.'
The fiercely religious footballer is proud of his Christian beliefs and has links with the Atletas de Cristo (Athletes of Christ) – a non-profit organisation that is made up of sportsmen and which was started in Brazil in 1984. The movement counts Kaka - another professional footballer who says he will remain a virgin until marriage - among its many devotees.
