Nigeria’s Best Performers In NECO Examinations Get LearnAfrica Rewards

Master Nder Sesugh Samuel from Vaatia College, Makurdi , Benue State has emerged overall best candidate in the 2014 NECO examination in Nigeria, as prizes were given out at the LearnAfrica – NECO Excellence Awards.

Samuel was given N100,000 cash, a certificate, a trophy, a laptop computer, a plaque and a smart phone alongside other prizes. A teacher in his school, Timothy Terna Mande, was adjudged the best teacher and given N100,000 cash, a plaque and a certificate.

“The award is targeted at students, teachers and schools as a way of encouraging strong commitment to learning and healthy rivalry. It is also appreciate teachers for their dedication to duty, and schools for providing the right atmosphere for effective teaching and learning,” Learn Africa Education Development Foundation’s Chairman, Chief Emeke Iwerebon said.

Adesokan Adediran Sakirudeen and Raji Oluwatobi Quadri who are the first and second best in Lagos State, emerged the overall second and third best students in Nigeria respectively. Sakirudeen won a cash prize of N80, 000 and plaque in the national award, with additional cash prize of N40, 000 and a certificate in the state award, while Quadri got N60, 000 and a plaque in the national award and an additional N30, 000 and certificate in the state award. Adepoju Barakat Aderonke, a student of Chrisland College, Idimu, won a cash prize of N20, 000 and a certificate as the third best in Lagos State.

Makinde Victor, a student of College of Education Demonstration Secondary School, Ikere Ekiti, won the new concept prize for the best score in Mathematics; Abu Ehiozomwangie from Ase-Osa Hope Foundation School, Benin, won the new concept prize for the best score in English; Mary Adamu of Government Girls Day Secondary School, Zamfara State, received Dr. Ameyo Stella Adadevoh prize for the best score in Biology; while Agbaijoh Ikiyouko-Amiyen of Ukhuba-Ama High School, Ajapa, Kogi State won the J.F. Ade-Ajayi prize for the best score in History.

According to Iwerebon, the awards is the corporate social responsibility arm of LearnAfrica, and it is targeted at highlighting the importance of education to national development.

He therefore tasked the awardees to be committed to life-long learning, saying “Only those who develop the ability to continuously acquire knowledge can become masters of their fate rather than victims of circumstances.”
