Trailer Crushes Okada Rider In Ibadan

An Okada Rider, whose identity is yet to be ascertained on Tuesday met his untimely death at the popular Iwo Road Roundabout, Ibadan, Oyo State capital as he was overrun by a trailer.

The incident generated serious tension in the area as the colleagues of the late motorcyclist were about to take law into their hands before security agents took control.

It was alleged that the death was caused by the activities of Vehicles Inspection Officers (VIO).

Eyewitness account disclosed that the middle aged cyclist was overrun by the Lagos bound trailer after he was hit by a commercial cab whose driver was trying to evade inspection by the VIOs.

It was disclosed that the VIOs had arrived the Iwo road Roundabout and commenced checking of commercial vehicles. According to the people while the VIOs stopped the driver of the Micra cab for checking and he wanted to run away,  he hit the okada man who unfortunately swerved right underneath the trailer and was killed him on the spot. Sensing danger, it was learnt that the VIOs immediately took off from the scene of the accident, giving sympathisers the impression that they wanted to pursue the trailer driver who drove towards Lagos Expressway while the driver of the Micra cab equally bolted away during the commotion.

When it became glaring that the VIOs had escaped from the scene of the accident, the other Okada operators, who initially prevented vehicular movements at Iwo Road Junction, stormed the Ikolaba Office of the VIOs, where they were alleged to have vandalised the office before policemen came to the scene.

Though reaction from the police was still being awaited as at the time of filling this report, security had however been beefed up in and around Iwo Road while the lifeless body of the Okada man was still lying on the spot where he was killed.
