Pro-Saraki Protesters Besiege National Assembly Complex

Protesters under the auspices of Ohanaeze Ndi-Igbo Youth Movement (ONYM) have oragnised demonstrations at the entrance of the National Assembly complex in Abuja to show solidarity to the embattled Senate president, Senator Bukola Saraki who is facing corruption charges at the Code of Conduct Tribunal.

The group’s members who turned out in large numbers in the early hours of Tuesday, September 29, were seen carrying placards and banners depicting various inscriptions to show support for Bukola Saraki. They are opposed to calls that Saraki resign as Senate president. The group led by Uche Nnadi, alleged that the current trial of Senator Bukola Saraki was politically motivated by political elites under the guise of anti-corruption war.
Uche Nnadi accused politicians of misusing security agencies for selfish gains, stating that “it is an act of corruption to use the anti-corruption war for party politics and political benefits”.
He said:We are not by any means supporting corruption. We condemn it in all ramifications. But we will not sit down and allow anyone no matter how highly placed to derial the war.”
He faulted the trial of Saraki by the Code of Conduct Tribunal, saying that he was being persecuted because his emergence as Senate president allowed an Igbo man to be the deputy Senate president.

He said Saraki’s trial was a grand plot to remove him from office by politicians opposed to his reign as Senate president.

The chairman, Senate Adhoc Committee on media and publicity, Senator Dino Melaye assured the group that their complaints would be noted.

Meanwhile, some organisations, including labour unions, have already called for Saraki’s resignation from office for alleged false declaration of assets at the Code of Conduct Bureau.
