Super Eagles midfielder, John Obi Mikel has been appointed new team captain with just 24 hours to the crucial Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) qualifier against the Pharaohs of Egypt in Kaduna.
The news was revealed at the pre-match press briefing in Kaduna, after former captain, Ahmed Musa decided to step down for the Chelsea midfielder to rock the leadership affair in the national team, and the CSKA forward is now the team’s vice-captain.
The former Kano Pillars winger, Musa was appointed by former coach, Sunday Oliseh, the decision which didn’t go down well with most senior players in the team; as it forced former captain and goalkeeper, Vincent Enyeama into early retirement from the national team.
According to report from Kaduna, Musa himself broke the news to the media that he has decided to step down as the captain, with Mikel taking over. Mikel on his own part responded as revealed on the Nigeria Football Association (NFF) official handle. “Mikel: Thanks to Musa and the Team. It will be a new @NGSuperEagles with a new approach,” the tweet reads on Thursday.
The Super Eagles play Pharaohs of Egypt on Friday for the 2017 AFCON qualifier, at the Ahmadu Bello Stadium, in Kaduna.
