Yacine Brahimi is voted BBC African Footballer of the Year.

The Algerian winger received the most votes to beat closest rival Vincent Enyeama to a second-place finish.

“I dedicate the award to my family, all the African countries, but especially my country, Algeria,” the FC Porto winger told the BBC World News.

“This trophy is going to give me some strength, the desire to learn and also some inspiration for some great performance.”

Gabonese Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang, who plays for Borussia Dortmund and Ivorian pair Gervinho of AS Roma and Manchester City’s Yaya Toure were also in the running.

Toure claimed the gong in 2013. Only Austin ‘jay jay’Okocha has claimed the award twice in history.
Brahimi is also in contention for the Caf Footballer of the Year 2014 award, having made the final cut.

A member of Algerian squad, which reached the last-16 for the first time, the 24-year-old winner scored his first international goal in the 4-2 victory over South Korea in the group stage.

Brahimi started the year at Spanish club Granada, where his impressive showing earned him the recognition of the best African player in the La Liga for the 2014-14 season.

He joined Portuguese club Porto after the World Cup. He has scored six goals in 15 appearances for his new club.

Brahimi is much favoured to feature at the 2015 Africa Cup of Nations (Afcon) with Algeria. The tournament billed for Equatorial Guinea is scheduled for January 17 through to February 8.

Brahimi said: “The African Cup of Nations will be a huge inspiration for me and I hope it can drive myself and Algeria on to great things at the tournament in the new year.”

Thierry Henry Exits New York Red Bulls

Thierry Henry has confirmed he will quit Major League Soccer (MLS) club New York Red Bulls after four-and-a-half years stateside.

The former Arsenal striker revealed he would now “take the next few weeks to reflect” before deciding on his next career move following his final match on Saturday- a 2-2 draw with the New England Revolution, which completed a 4-3 aggregate loss to the latter in the Eastern Conference playoff of the MLS Cup.

Henry said in his statement: “The decision has always been that I would leave after the duration of my contract and although that was never going to change, I didn’t want it to distract from the progress of the team.

“I have immensely enjoyed my four-and-a-half years here and would like to thank everyone involved with this club who has made my time here so enjoyable.
The 37-year-old won the World Cup with France on home soil in 1998. His only Uefa Champions League winner’s medal came in Barcelona’s victory over Manchester United in the 2009 Rome final.

Henry won two Premier League titles with the Gunners during his spell at the north London club, spanning between 1999 and 2007. He returned to Arsenal on loan in 2012 and featured in four matches, including a substitute appearance in an FA Cup third round win over Leeds, where he scored the match-winning goal.

In a recent interview with French newspaper L’Equipe last month, he hinted at another return to the Emirates Stadium.

He said: “I have not taken any decision and speculation is not my thing. One thing is certain: I will stay in football, as a coach, a consultant or executive. We will see.

“The second certainty is that I would love to see Arsenal win the Champions League. Whether that is from near or far does not depend on me, but it is sure I’d like to help. This is my club and, as a player, I was not able to give them the Champions League.”

Nigerian Student Stabbed To Death In Accra

A 27-year-old Nigerian student studying in Ghana, Nazifi Osman Muhammed, has been stabbed to death by armed robbers at his Accra New Town residence.

Muhammed was reportedly stabbed in the stomach and chest.

Ghanaian news website, Daily Guide reports that two other students, Jamiru Osman, 23, and Mustapha Musa, 22 were injured in the Sunday morning attack.

Osman and Musa are reportedly on admission at the Korle-Bu Teaching Hospital.
All three victims are said to be students of Sikkim Manipul University, Circle, Accra, studying Information Communication Technology (ICT).

Daily Guide reports that the robbers might have targeted the students after learning that they received $4000 dollars from their relative in Nigeria.

Meanwhile, a suspect believed to be one of the attackers was arrested by residents of the area, but the police is yet unsure of his complicity.

Confirming the suspect's arrest, the Kotobabi District Police Commander, DSP Elizabeth Tiekuwaa Dankwa, told Daily Guide, that the suspect would be interrogated.

“Suspect was apprehended hours after the robbery attack by residents when he was passing in front of the house, on suspicion that he might be one of the suspects, but it is the duty of the police to confirm that through investigations," Dankwa said.

“We are keeping him in our custody to assist us in our investigations."
One of the victims, who was only stabbed in the hands told police that the robbers attacked them with a kitchen knife around 3:30 am.

“Complainant said they were all rushed to the Korle-Bu Teaching Hospital for treatment by neighbours but Nazifi was pronounced dead by doctors on arrival at the health facility while Jamiru, who was unconscious, was admitted,” the police chief reportedly said.

Muhammed's body has been deposited at the Korle-Bu Teaching hospital.
It will be recalled that Mr. Godwin Ayogu, a 19-year-old Nigerian studying at the University of Cape Coast, was murdered at the University of Cape Coast in Ghana.

BREAKING: Again, two explosions rip through Maiduguri market, many feared dead

Many persons are feared killed in Maiduguri, the Borno State capital, Monday after two explosions went off at the Maiduguri main market, where two suicide bombers last week detonated deadly explosives, killing themselves and several other people.

The explosions sounded almost one after the other at about 11:20 am.

A witness, Abba Ibrahim, who works as a security guard at a government hospital near the market, told journalists that the thunderous blasts caused several traders to scamper to safety.

“As it is now, people are running for dear lives, so one cannot confirm to you the extent of damage, but the two blasts we just heard were too loud that it could cause more damage than the ones of last week,” he said.

A trader, Dauda Bala, who spoke with journalists on phone said, “The security and other aid workers are trying to evacuate the dead and injured persons from the scene of the explosion…I can’t say how many were killed or injured but I have seen very many victims dripping with blood, others with parts of their bodies dismembered by the blasts”.

Another witness at the market, who gave his name as Mallam Bashir, said the explosions were caused by two suspected female suicide bombers.

“The explosions occurred at the area where fowls are being sold inside the market, very close to the First Bank branch. Those close enough to the place said it was two girls that came into the market with the bomb,” said Mr. Bashir, a used cloth vendor.

The spokesperson of the Borno State Command of the Nigeria Police, Gideon Jubrin, confirmed the incident but said details of the incidents were still sketchy.

“Of course we heard the explosions somewhere in town but it will be too early now to say what actually happened and what damage was caused by the explosion until much later,” he said.
