Food Vendor Chops Off Maid’s Finger For Allegedly Stealing Meat

For stealing what she described as the biggest chunk of meat in a pot of soup, a food vendor, simply identified as Mama Jennifer, at the weekend chopped off a finger of one of her maids around Akuose New Layout Ibuso/Asaba axis of Delta State, a 10-year-old known as Ndozi.

Reports said that residents of the area rushed to the scene by the cry of the teenager.

The matter has been reported to the police in the state.

The Police Public Relations Officer in the state, DSP Celestina Kalu, disclosed that the suspect, a mother of four children is currently helping the police at the state CID with more information on what led to the incident.

Upon interrogation, she admitted to the inhuman treatment meted out on the maid, adding that she was provoked when it was discovered that the maid stole from the pieces of meat in the Nsalla soup leaving her with no option than to chop-off her finger with the knife she was holding.

DSP Kalu said that the victim was taken to a private hospital where she is currently receiving treatment, adding that two young men who beat up the suspect to a pulp after the incident had also been arrested for taking the laws into their hands.

She said that the police will do everything possible for justice to take its course, adding that the popular stopover restaurant has been deserted for fear of the unknown.

Orji slashes fees at Abia State University by 20%

The Governor of Abia state, Chief Theodore Orji, has approved 20 per cent reduction across board in the school fees of students of Abia State University, Uturu.

In a statement signed by Secretary to Abia State Government, Professor Mkpa Agu Mkpa, Governor Orji said the gesture was to boost education in the state.

“Following the present economic crunch in the country occasioned by the oil prices in the international market, as a result of which students of ABSU and their patents are in great difficulty coping with the demands of their school fees in the institution, His Excellency, the Governor of Abia State, Chief T.A. Orji as a demonstration of his sympathy with the plight of the students, their parents and guardians, has magnanimously approved the reduction of school fees payable by all students in Abia State University by 20 per cent across the board.

“This kind gesture of His Excellency seeks to ameliorate the hardship currently being experience by parents and students as a result of the said oil price fluctuations. Government therefore expects the staff, students and management of Abia State University, Uturu, to reciprocate the Governor’s kindness by remaining disciplined and law abiding at all times.”

UPDATE: Explosions, Gunfire in Damaturu as Military & Boko Haram Face Off

The Yobe state capital, Damaturu is currently under Boko Haram insurgents' attack. And according to reports, the mobile Police base and other places have been burnt.

The attackers stormed the town around 4:45 am and detonated explosives along the Gujba road before they advanced to the Mobile base where they set it ablaze. The gunmen shot their way indiscriminately into the base but casualty figures could not ascertain at the time of filing this report. A resident told Daily trust:

"I was performing ablution to say my early morning prayers when a loud blast went off and shooting continued. We all ran into the bush but we can see the mobile base in flames and shootings are still on."

Resident of a three- bed room estate along Gujba road confirmed that the attackers have raided the area shooting and detonating explosives.

"We can see thick smokes going up and hearing intermittent shootings," a resident said.

Students of the Yobe state University told DailyTrust that they managed to escape to the bush from their hostels but they could not confirm if the schools was torched. Many residents of the town close to the area of attacks have started fleeing in droves through the Gashua road.

Meanwhile, a fighter jet from the Nigerian Air force is said to have arrived to provide aerial cover for the troops battling the insurgents. Gujba and Gulani Local Government areas have been under Boko haram control since July this year.

At 8:50, reports coming in from Damaturu said the shootings were subsiding after the military plane hovered around for about 45 minutes, dropping bombs.

Nigeria's Anti-Gay Law is ‘Forcing People Underground’ - Nigerian Writer Warns

A Nigerian writer who was forced to leave the country to go live in the US after receiving death threats has warned that Nigeria’s anti-gay law is forcing the country’s gay community underground.

Novelist Jude Dibia penned controversial 2005 novel Walking with Shadows, which is thought to be the first Nigerian novel that has a gay man as its central character. And in a new interview with Voice of Africa, Dibia made the warning. He told VOA:
 “Being gay in Nigeria is so funny because you cannot admit to it. You have to pass as something else and create a different persona and live that persona. And, sometimes for some people, they end up being married and they have families and they try to suppress who they are.
But, there is a lot of depression and struggles there. People have gone further underground, but they still are trying to survive. And, I think maybe that is why online now on the Internet and on blogs you are seeing more stories coming out. There is a lot of anger festering in the underbelly. But, more stories are popping out there because of this law. And, I think it is a good thing. In its own way, it is a good thing.”
Dibia’s novel was one of the first to deal with the taboo subject of homosexuality in Nigeria. Bookstores in Nigeria refused to stock the book but, according to Dibia, the book soldby word of mouth and has become his best-selling novel in the country.
